Where Is The Innovation Of Automobile Steel Roll Stamping Technology Which Has Won The Annual Innovation Award?
Posco recently completed a 1 million-ton gigabit steel production line at its Gwangyang plant. Choi Jeong-woo, CHAIRMAN of POSCO, said at the ceremony, "The successful completion of the production line with an annual capacity of 1 million tons of gigabit steel will further promote poSCO to become the world's top environment-friendly steel supplier."
On October 13, the World Steel Association announced the winners of the 2021 "Steelie Award", and POSCO won the Annual Innovation Award for its gigabit steel special automotive steel roll stamping technology. The innovation Award recognizes the steel company that has demonstrated the most innovative ability to advance technology or improve the environment.
Posco gigabit steel is ultra-strong and lightweight steel with tensile strength of more than 1 Gigapascals and can withstand more than 100 kilograms per square millimeter, which has obvious advantages in durability and safety.
The lightweight of automobile body cannot be separated from high strength materials. Due to the poor ductility of high strength steel, especially ultra-high strength steel with tensile strength over 780 mpa, most steel enterprises adopt the roll compression composite forming process to produce special-shaped cold formed steel. However, there are some problems in this process, such as raw material fracture due to poor formability of high strength steel. Posco's one-giga-steel roller stamping technology for automotive steel perfectly solves the problem that raw materials are prone to fracture due to poor formability of high-strength steel by eliminating residual stress in deformed sections and force imbalance between deformed sections within parts. Posco, for example, used the technology to produce cold-formed car door bumper beams with tensile strength of 1.2 gigapascals and thickness of 1.0 mm, reducing component weight by 10 per cent and cost savings of 20 per cent.
IHS Markit, an overseas market research firm, forecasts global demand for gigabit steel will grow from 6.7 million tons in 2020 to 12.4 million tons in 2025, an average annual growth rate of 13 percent. Therefore, poSCO will have a huge market for gigabit steel. Posco's roller stamping technology for special automotive steel sheet reduces the thickness of steel sheet, improves its formability and makes it easy to process, which conforms to the development trend of new energy vehicle industry and further enhances its competitiveness in the field of automotive sheet manufacturing.
