Two new electric furnaces will be built at Tata Steel's Port Talbot UK plant
Tata Steel and British Construction and Civil Engineering company signed the Port Talbot steel plant electric furnace project construction contract. The British Construction and Civil Engineering company will be responsible for the civil, structural and construction works of the project, and plans to construct and install two new electric furnaces. The two new furnaces are expected to come on stream in 2027 with an annual capacity of 3 million tons.
In September 2023, Tata Steel announced that it had reached a funding agreement with the UK government for a £1.25 billion (US $1.55 billion) low carbon transition project for its Port Talbot steel plant. Under the agreement, the British government will provide 500 million pounds (about $620 million) for the project, with the rest of the funding coming from Tata Steel itself. In 2024, Tata Steel's Port Talbot plant shut down two blast furnaces with a total capacity of 4.8 million tonnes, as well as an accompanying converter (with a capacity of 5 million tonnes), which is currently produced using purchased slabs.
Tata Steel officials said that its green transformation project will be carried out in the Port Talbot steel plant includes: the construction of an electric furnace, ladle furnace, and other related works, and new equipment will be built on the site of the converter.
