The world's major steel enterprises have achieved more low-carbon smelting results
In order to cope with the challenges of increasingly tight global resources and increasing environmental pressure, many steel enterprises have increased technological innovation and capital investment, and strive to achieve breakthroughs in low-carbon smelting technology.
At ArcelorMittal, the world's first new technology to recover carbon dioxide from steel production began trials in July at its plant in Ammigent, Belgium. D-CRBN, based in Antwerp, has developed a technology that uses plasma to convert carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide. The technology uses renewable electricity and plasma to break the carbon-oxygen bond, thereby converting carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide can be used as a reducing agent in steelmaking, replacing some of the coke or metallurgical coal used in blast furnaces. Ammi has also started construction of an electric arc furnace (EAF) for long wood production at the Gijon steel plant, with the first production expected in the first quarter of 2026.
Thyssenkrupp Steel Business unit proposed that the key to carbon reduction in steelmaking is the construction of direct reduction plants. In contrast to traditional blast furnaces, direct reduction plants do not produce pig iron, but solid sponge iron. To further process it into high-quality steel, the company's steel business unit needs to melt solid sponge iron into a product similar to pig iron with the help of green energy. The ThyssenKrupp Steel business unit plans to put its first direct reduction plant into operation on an industrial scale in 2024.
Hesteel Group recently released news that it has promoted the implementation of a new short process project of "hydrogen-based shaft furnace - near-zero carbon emission electric arc furnace", relying on the new hydrogen-based direct reduced iron - electric arc furnace process production line, and accelerated the creation of green productivity with "hydrogen metallurgy + electric arc furnace" steelmaking process as the core. As one of the world's eight cutting-edge low-carbon common technology directions determined by the China Iron and Steel Association, the project is guided by Hesteel Group and University of Science and Technology Beijing with near-zero carbon in smelting process, near-zero carbon in energy source and near-zero carbon in raw material production. Focusing on the core technologies of high quality and low carbon preparation of hydrogen-based direct reduced iron, efficient green energy supply of electric arc furnace steelmaking, and direct reduced iron smelting with electric arc furnace, the research and development of key technologies of hydrogen-based shaft furnace-near-zero carbon emission electric arc furnace steelmaking and engineering application research are systematically carried out, and the goal of near-zero carbon emission of crude steel is finally achieved.
The Steel pipe and Strip Steel Division of Baosteel Co., LTD., a subsidiary of China Baowu, has recently completed the transformation of low-carbon, energy-saving and efficient electric furnaces, which has improved the efficiency of electric furnaces and reduced the carbon emission level through equipment upgrading and the use of all scrap steel smelting process. The transformation is expected to help it save 17,000 tons of standard coal and reduce carbon by more than 500,000 tons per year.
