Global crude steel production fell 4.7 per cent in September from a year earlier
On October 22, the World Steel Association (WSA) released global crude steel production data for September 2024. In September, crude steel production in the 71 countries and regions included in the World Steel Association's statistics was 143.6 million tons, down 4.7% year-on-year. From January to September, the crude steel production of 71 countries and regions included in the World Steel Association statistics was 1.394 billion tons, down 1.9% year-on-year.
From the world's 10 largest steel producing countries (places), in September, China's crude steel production was 77.07 million tons, down 6.1% year on year; India's crude steel production was 11.7 million tonnes, down 0.2% year-on-year; Crude steel production in the United States was 6.7 million tons, up 1.2% year-on-year; Japan's crude steel production was 6.6 million tonnes, down 5.8% year-on-year; Russia's crude steel production is estimated at 5.6 million tons, down 10.3%. South Korea's crude steel production was 5.5 million tons, up 1.3% year-on-year; Turkey's crude steel production was 3.1 million tons, up 6.5% year-on-year; Germany's crude steel production was 3 million tons, up 4.3% year-on-year; Brazil's crude steel production was 2.8 million tons, an increase of 9.9%. Iran's crude steel production is estimated at 1.5 million tons, down 41.2% year-on-year.
Production of direct reduced iron (DRI) in 13 countries was 10.22 million tonnes in September, down 2.4% year-on-year. Among them, India's direct reduced iron production of 4.48 million tons, an increase of 8.2%; Iran's direct reduced iron production was 2.91 million tons, down 8.0% year-on-year. From January to September, direct reduced iron production in 13 countries was 92 million tons, up 4.2% from the same period last year.
